In “Butcher & Blackbird” by Brynne Weaver, we follow Sloane and Rowan, two murderers, as a chance encounter sparks a yearly rival game between them. A friendship builds over four years, but isn’t that how love truly starts?
What in the world did I just read? I never thought I would be rooting for two murderers in a novel, but here we are. Hear me out: these two murder the most vile humans who walk the earth. They take justice into their own hands. These horrible serial killers have no chance of being judged by their peers in a court of law with Sloane and Rowan on the hunt. Does that make me a horrible person for rooting for these two? Maybe. Luckily, it’s just a work of fiction.
Not only was the whole story entertaining and unputdownable, but it was also steamy! The author included a complete list of trigger warnings at the beginning, which made me even more curious to read it.
The only thing that could have made this novel better is more spaced-out steamy romance scenes. Once it started, it really just kept going. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it was a little exhausting for this non-romance reader. Maybe your opinion might differ.
If you’re looking for a dark, murderous romance, this is your sign to pick up this novel now. It is highly entertaining and unique.
