Book Review – “Revival” by Stephen King

“Revival” by Stephen King follows Jamie Morton as a child during his first interaction with Pastor Charles Jacobs and throughout his life, featuring recurring interactions with the pastor. Pastor Charles Jacobs is obsessed with electricity and is convinced that the devices he invents will treat various illnesses, alongside God, who goes to great lengths to protect His reputation as a phony pastor-turned-healer.

Stephen King pulled me into Jamie Morton’s life, and it was fascinating. However, this novel lacked what horror is known for until the very last part of the book. The secrets, trials, and tribulations of Jamie’s life made this novel what it truly was. Don’t get me wrong; the pastor was an important and interesting character, but I felt that he was added in just for the horror aspect.

Let’s talk about the last part of the book, which included the actual horror; it was incredibly underwhelming and disappointing. I truly believe that if I were a “woman of God,” it would be somewhat terrifying. However, I am not, and therefore, it was not much of a terrifying experience.

I would honestly categorize this more as contemporary fiction, at best.

Would I recommend it? No. I honestly think this one is worth skipping. However, if you’re interested in reading about the life of a rocker, including sex and drugs, this could be for you. Please don’t go into this novel believing it will be a wild and terrifying story.
