“Silence for the Dead” by Simone St. James follows Kitty Weekes, who falsifies her past to obtain a nursing position at Portis House. Portis House was once a magnificent estate that has been turned into a hospital for mentally ill men who returned home from the war. But are the men truly not improving their mental illnesses, or is there something more sinister moving in the hallways that is affecting them?
I absolutely devoured this novel! Between the 1919 timeframe, the dark and creepy setting, and the fact that it takes place in an asylum, what’s not to love?
St. James took me back in time to a dark asylum with questionable characters. Her vivid descriptions were immersive, and I felt as if I were right alongside Kitty the whole time. Speaking of questionable characters, Kitty is truly amazing! She may have falsified her background, but she is hardworking and learns quickly. I definitely have respect for her in that sense. As a matter of fact, you can’t help but love the rest of the cast, including the mental patients. They all have their quirks.
There’s also a slow love story included in this amazing thriller, and it really puts the cherry on top of the ice cream.
From the gothic setting, historical fiction, paranormal events, and the sweet, subtle love story, this book has something for everyone. I highly recommend it. Have a blanket and a hot cup of coffee ready when you sit down to read this. Oh, and make sure the light is on, and buckle up for a great ghost story.
