“This Cursed House” by Del Sandeen follows Jemma Barker in 1962 as she is hired by the eccentric Duchon family to work (as she assumes) as a tutor. However, when Jemma arrives at the Duchon family estate, she is greeted by a family that looks down on her because of the dark color of her skin. Soon enough, Jemma realizes that she wasn’t hired as a tutor but for something more sinister.
This story is filled with disturbing secrets to be revealed, racism, friendship, forgiveness, truthfulness, and self-discovery. It is not exactly a fast-paced read, but it is worth the journey as Jemma painfully navigates the unfamiliar, racist setting, the horrible family, and the ghost-filled home of the past.
I recommend this book to both thriller and horror fans alike. It is unique in the sense that I haven’t read a book even similar to this one. The conclusion of the story will leave you in tears and with goosebumps on your skin.
