“The Rain in Vlae” by Oktay Ahmed follows a family of four as they walk back to their home in Skopje, Macedonia, from a visit to the mall. However, once the weather turns into a frightening thunderstorm, the family’s life is ripped apart. There’s something sinister in the storm.
Thank you, Oktay Ahmed, for the gifted eARC for review purposes. I also purchased my own copy as well. All opinions expressed here are my own.
At 18 pages, this is one short story that packs a terrifying punch. We all know about natural disasters, but what lies in this storm is something sinister and horrifying.
I was completely invested in both the vast descriptions (which were beautifully written), the grief, and the characters. I had to know if the sinister storm entity would rip everyone apart or what was to come.
The ending blew my mind! Well done, Ahmed. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all.
I recommend this short story to any horror lover. It would be well-read if you are cozy and safe indoors during a thunderstorm. Grab a cup of something hot and make yourself at home.
