“A Killing Cold” by Kate Alice Marshall follows newly engaged Theo as she spends a few weeks with her fiancé’s rich and powerful family at their winter retreat. Theo receives threatening text messages and notes warning her to stay away from the Dalton family. Who is sending these warnings, and why?
This is a great winter thriller with unlikable characters, a dysfunctional family, an isolated location, and twisted connections to the past. Marshall certainly focuses on character development with the beloved main character, Theo, and her complicated childhood. It took me reading half the book to develop a solid opinion on the novel due to the first half being focused mainly on character development.
Lastly, part of the ending felt rushed and confusing for me as I tried to connect the dots with so many characters involved. However, it is eventually laid out properly, and the confusion clears.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a different type of winter thriller with a unique plot.
