New Review – “The Husband” by Daniel Hurst

“The Husband” by Daniel Hurst follows a married couple, Jenny and Lachlan, as they plan a final vacation before their daughter leaves for university. When Jenny and her daughter watch a true crime documentary about an unsolved cold case that takes place in the town where Lachlan grew up, they decide it’s the perfect place to visit before their daughter goes to university. However, Lachlan is not entirely on board with visiting his own stomping grounds, and his hesitation and erratic behavior bother Jenny. What secrets is Lachlan protecting? Does it have anything to do with the unsolved murder from decades ago?

This book starts out similarly to a reverse detective mystery, as we are already given all the information up front. I found the dual POVs into the daily lives of the spouses incredibly boring. I couldn’t connect with the storyline because I felt like I was just following the daily lives of two people, and there was absolutely no thrill to it. There are no big plot twists, no red herrings, and no conclusions to draw at all. It was incredibly mundane and predictable. This is the second novel I’ve read by this author, and I think, at this point in time, I’m done pursuing any more books by him.
