“The Wife Upstairs” by Rachel Hawkins follows Jane, the new but broke dog walker for Thornfield Estates, a gated community in Birmingham, Alabama. Eddie, Thornfield Estates’ handsome bachelor and recently widowed, falls in love with the new dog walker, but Jane can’t seem to move past the fact that she has big shoes to fill. Eddie’s wife was an amazingly successful woman with a rags-to-riches tale, but what exactly happened to her? One night, she went out on her boat with her best friend, never to return. What happened?
So apparently, this is a retelling of “Jane Eyre”. It’s good to know if you’re interested in pursuing the original classic. Either way, I thought this was an okay read. It kept me engaged enough, but it seemed a bit underwhelming as far as thrillers go. I was expecting more tense situations, more “what-if” moments, and more neighborhood drama, but it was lacking. I digress.
Overall, if you’re looking for a quick read with an ending that will make you question the outcome, here it is. Enjoy!
