“The Haunting of Maddy Clare” by Simone St. James follows Sarah Piper, who works for a temporary agency, as she is hired by the handsome, rich WWI veteran Alistair Gellis to assist him in investigating a ghost haunting. The ghost of nineteen-year-old Maddy Clare is angry and vengeful. Will Sarah be able to step up in this new, eccentric role? Will Maddy ever be able to rest in peace?
Simone St. James has a way of writing such beautiful, atmospheric novels; add in the Roaring Twenties era and a spooky ghost story, and you’ve got yourself a package full of entertainment. There might even be a side romance story too, which adds even more to the narrative.
Overall, I enjoyed this story very much. Although it’s a little slow-paced, it is beautifully written, and I would recommend giving it a read.
