“Who is the Liar” by Laura Lee Bahr follows 10-year-old Topaz while a serial killer is loose in her town, preying upon children. But don’t worry; she’s safe, as her older sister Ruby reveals that she has the killer tied up in one of their unused rooms in their home, “the cold space room.” Is this man who is tied up really the serial killer?
Personally, I feel that this book is mediocre. It just didn’t wow me, but it wasn’t horrible either.
I would have enjoyed the story more if one of the side characters, who is Ruby’s boyfriend, had been more developed. I feel like he was used to distract the reader but was only mentioned and actually present in the story for a short period of time. If he had been more developed in the story, then he would have thrown me off more. It almost seems pointless to have him in the story. Also, overall, the story is completely unbelievable.
There are quite a few trigger warnings in this book, such as mentions of child murder, molestation, blood, and gore. Always do your research ahead of time if you have triggers.
The biggest appeal to me was having a 10-year-old narrator. It was kind of fun and childish at the same time. Topaz was the real gem of the story.
Overall, it was just an okay read, but you might enjoy it. Happy reading!
