“You Are Fatally Invited” by Andre Pliego follows Mila, the host of J.R. Alastor’s writing retreat, along with a handful of well-known thriller writers. All the writers harbor deep, dark secrets, and Alastor’s thriller-themed “games” require these writers to admit their secrets. But will they willingly confess their wrongdoings? What if murder is involved?
Overall, I think this story was just okay. It almost played out like a game of Clue, but the bodies just kept on stacking up.
The story would have been more enjoyable to me if there hadn’t been so many points of view. It was honestly too many characters to keep track of, and I constantly found myself getting confused or forgetting whose POV I was reading. Also, there was something about the style of writing that was hard for me to read. I read this book a lot slower than I’m used to, just so that I could try to sort all the details out in my head. To me, that was not enjoyable.
I will say that I did enjoy all the secrets that the authors harbored, and trying to pick apart each character and their involvement with one another was kind of fun. I also especially enjoyed the locked door and isolated setting.
Overall, you might enjoy this thriller if you like your books with loads of complex characters and an incredible amount of dialogue. Happy reading!
